Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park is located in the Black Hills of south western South Dakota and provides two distinct experiences, a caving adventure and prairie hiking.  The park was established to protect one of the longest caves in the world, with a length of over 122 miles.  The Civilian Conservation Corps installed numerous improvements such as paved trails and stairs that make parts of the cave accessible to all. The cave is considered sacred by the Lakota people who believe this to be the place from which humanity originated.

While the park was established to protect the cave system, the prairie landscape offers numerous improved trails for visitors hiking pleasure.  The trails vary in length and difficulty.  The park hosts six miles of the Centennial Trails which is a 110 mile trail that traverses the Black Hills.  The park hosts a free ranging herd of bison and is also home to elk, prairie dogs, and pronghorn.
