Devil’s Tower National Monument, know as Bears Lodge to Native Americans, offers hiking and picnicking in the shadow of the tower. Devil’s Tower is located in eastern Wyoming and is considered sacred to over twenty Native American tribes. This monolithic rock formation was once hidden beneath the surface but was revealed as the surrounding area eroded. The tower trails provide a paved surface to wander around the base of the tower. The surrounding area is home to prairie dogs, pronghorn, coyote and bald eagles. Devil’s Tower was featured in the movie
Close Encounter of the Third Kind, 1977.
