Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park Banner

Badlands National Park, located in southwestern South Dakota, offers a variety of activities for individuals of all skills and abilities.  The park protects the highly erodible landscape know as the White River Badlands and the largest mixed-grass prairie in the United States.  The park’s South Unit, also know as the Stronghold Unit, is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and co-managed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

The North Unit of the park is bounded by Loop Road which provides viewers with stunning views of the ever changing badlands formations.  Travels along this road can bring folks into contact with much of the wildlife found in the park: bison, prairie dogs, mule deer, and coyotes.

The park offers several short improved hiking trails that allow individuals to experience the Badlands.  Badlands National Park also contains a federally designated wilderness area, the Sage Creek Wilderness Area, which can provide a back-country experience for individuals wanting a more challenging hiking experience.  The park’s bison herd roams freely in the Sage Creek Wilderness Area.
